Known for high success rates, recent controlled elk hunts reached up to 73%, while general deer hunts average 24–32%.

OTC Tags: Over-the-counter tags have been available for both deer and elk (general rifle and archery), with resident sales typically opening December 1. Deer success averages around 28%, with a strong presence of 5-point or better bucks. Elk “A” tags cover Units 23 & 24 during the late November general season, often aligning with the rut and selling out quickly.

Controlled (Draw) Tags: Draw-only tags offer access to prime rut periods. Recent success for controlled cow elk tags in Unit 23-3 ranged from 26% to 75%, with strong opportunities for mature bulls. Controlled bull elk and deer tags are issued by random lottery—Idaho has no preference point system.

Predators & Upland Game: Bear, mountain lion, wolf, and upland birds are all available OTC with long seasons. The seller reports nine black bears and five mountain lions harvested onsite.
